About
Guildford Chess Club
All you ever wanted to know about Guildford Chess Club. Some key
questions answered.
Who?
We are one of the strongest chess clubs in the UK, with approximately
50 regular players in membership spanning the complete ability range
from beginner to Grandmaster. We were awarded the BCF ( British
Chess Federation) Club of the Year award in 1996, which also marked
our Centenary.
What?
We field over a dozen teams in two local leagues (the Surrey League
and the Border League), and three teams in the 4NCL national league.
Some of our players also play for Surrey County teams. We have also
represented England in the European Club Cup.
There are also opportunities to play in various individual club
competitions.
When?
Guildford Chess Club is open from 7pm to 10.30pm on Monday evenings,
excluding August and Bank holidays. We also meet on some Thursdays.
Away matches with other teams in the local leagues take place Mondays
to Thursdays.
Where?
At the Guildford Institute, Ward Street, Guildford, Surrey. We
usually meet in the Assembly room on the first floor. In an adjacent
room used for analysis there is a licensed refreshment bar. (We
invariably adjourn at 10.30pm to the Live and Let Live pub round
the corner for post match analysis).
Map of Guildford town centre should help with finding
us.
From North Street in the town centre, enter Ward Street (Bank of
Scotland branch on the corner) and go through the first door on
the left a few metres along. Up one flight of stairs and turn left.
Congratulations, you have arrived.
NB – the venue is unfortunately not currently accessible to wheelchair
users, but plans have been drawn up to install a lift and facilities
during 2003.
How?
Ummm … now that is a tricky one. Next question please!
Why?
At the risk of sounding naïve … to play chess?
How
much?
Subs are £65 per year- substantial discounts for retired,
junior/student and unemployed members.
Is
there a Junior section?
We run a junior coaching section on Mondays 1800-1900 prior to the main club meeting. Juniors of secondary school age are welcome to join the club.
What
next?
For more information, contact the club secretary above, or just
turn up on a Monday evening. We welcome players of all standards,
no minimum strength required - just an interest in playing chess.
Introduce yourself to someone if we haven’t spotted you on arrival,
and we will arrange for someone to give you an informal game. We
wont ask you to decide to join until you have been along a few times
so you can decide first whether we meet your needs.
